Sun Screen Preparations
Sunscreen preparations are topical products designed to protect the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. These products contain a combination of active ingredients that work together to absorb, reflect or scatter the UV radiation, preventing it from penetrating the skin and causing damage. Sunscreen preparations are available in a variety of forms including lotions, creams, gels, sprays, sticks, and powders. The active ingredients in sunscreen preparations can be classified into two main categories: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing the UV radiation and converting it into heat, which is then dissipated from the skin. Physical sunscreens, on the other hand, work by reflecting and scattering the UV radiation away from the skin. Physical sunscreens contain mineral ingredients such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. The effectiveness of a sunscreen preparation is measured by its sun protection factor (SPF), which indicates the level of protection against UVB radiation, the type of radiation that causes sunburn. The higher the SPF, the greater the protection. It is recommended to use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and to reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Sunscreen preparations are an essential part of a comprehensive sun protection strategy, which also includes seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding sun exposure during peak hours. Overexposure to UV radiation can cause a range of skin damage, including sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer.
