Summer Story Single Family House

Summer Story Single Family House

Summer Story Single Family House is an exemplary architectural project situated at the foot of the Lefka Ori mountains in Crete, Greece, embodying a harmonious blend of traditional Cretan architecture and contemporary design sensibilities. This distinguished residential structure, spanning 250 square meters on a generous 4,700 square meter plot, was meticulously designed by architect Natalia Kokosalaki to accommodate a French family's vision of a summer retreat that seamlessly integrates with its Mediterranean surroundings. The design's most striking feature is its large arched entrance, which pays homage to Venetian architectural influences while leading to an enclosed courtyard that serves as a central gathering space. The residence exemplifies thoughtful environmental integration through its careful orientation, optimizing natural light and panoramic views while incorporating sustainable design principles. Local materials, including traditional stone and ocher, were prominently utilized in the construction, while local craftsmen were commissioned for all built-in furniture, maintaining authenticity and supporting regional artisanship. The project, completed in 2018, garnered recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, acknowledging its exceptional achievement in combining vernacular architectural elements with modern construction techniques. The house's design philosophy emphasizes the quintessential Cretan lifestyle through its strong indoor-outdoor connectivity, featuring wooden windows, doors, and shutters that reflect traditional building practices while facilitating contemporary living patterns.
