Su Zhou Residential House

Su Zhou Residential House is an exemplary residential architectural project that masterfully blends Oriental and Western design philosophies, completed in 2016 in China. This sophisticated dwelling represents a harmonious fusion of traditional Suzhou architectural elements with contemporary Italian design sensibilities, earning recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category. Designed by Feng Guoqiang and Chen Yan, the residence draws inspiration from classical Chinese poetry, particularly referencing works from the Song and Qing Dynasties that speak to the hidden beauty within urban spaces. The project's most distinctive feature is its innovative approach to natural light management, employing white walls and floors throughout to maximize light reflection in predominantly north-facing spaces, simultaneously addressing functional requirements while paying homage to traditional Suzhou architecture. The interior spaces showcase meticulous attention to detail, featuring custom-designed elements such as 6-meter vertical wooden grills with minimal seaming and seamless mirrored walls in the basement gymnasium. The design incorporates high-end Italian furniture and lighting fixtures while maintaining an unmistakably Oriental aesthetic sensibility. Notable technical achievements include the implementation of lightweight steel keels and plaster plates for perfectly level wall surfaces, and precisely engineered decorative recesses and lines throughout the structure. The project, which took two years from conception to completion, embodies the designers' philosophy of creating spaces that transcend time, as referenced in the Ming Dynasty text Treatise on Superfluous Things, achieving a delicate balance between modern luxury and traditional Chinese residential architecture.
