Stratum Folding Chair is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of organic aesthetics and advanced manufacturing technology. Created by designer Ammar Kalo, this sophisticated seating solution comprises two interlocking parts crafted from Baltic Birch plywood, featuring a distinctive folding mechanism that allows the chair to reduce its volume by half for efficient storage and transportation. The chair's design language is characterized by sharp sinuous lines and a flowing striated pattern, achieved through strategic CNC milling of laminated plywood, revealing the material's inherent beauty through carefully carved local and global geometries. Drawing inspiration from diverse sources including human body contours, Art Nouveau architecture, and naturally eroded rock formations, the chair showcases a unique three-legged base that creates an impression of delicate balance while maintaining structural integrity. The design's sophisticated interlocking joint system, influenced by traditional religious book stands, demonstrates exceptional technical innovation in furniture engineering. Manufactured using advanced 5-axis CNC milling technology, the chair measures 530 mm x 758 mm x 865 mm in its open position and collapses to 530 mm x 316 mm x 933 mm when folded. This remarkable piece of furniture design, which received the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, represents a significant achievement in combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary digital fabrication techniques, while maintaining a strong focus on functionality and aesthetic appeal.
