Strait Culture Art Center

Strait Culture Art Center is a monumental architectural masterpiece situated on the southern bank of the Minjiang River in Fuzhou City, Fujian Province, representing an innovative fusion of traditional Chinese cultural elements with contemporary design principles. This cultural complex, encompassing 152,601.48 square meters of total construction area, draws its architectural inspiration from the jasmine flower, Fuzhou's city flower, manifesting as five distinctive white petal-shaped buildings arranged in a fan-like composition along the riverside. The center comprises a multifunctional theatre, opera house, concert hall, art museum, film and television center, and central cultural hall, creating a comprehensive cultural hub. Designed by architects Zong Wu Xu and Pekka Salminen, along with their team including Martin Lukasczyk, Yu Hui Song, and others, the structure showcases remarkable technical innovation through its extensive use of traditional Chinese materials, featuring over 40,000 ceramic rods on the front facade and 36,000 ceramic plates on the back facade, making it a pioneering achievement in ceramic curtain wall construction. The design seamlessly integrates with local flood control facilities through the renovation and widening of the Liangcuo River, which flows through the complex like a flower stalk, while incorporating public spaces including an outdoor square, roof platform, and waterborne areas that connect with the Minjiang landscape system. This architectural marvel, completed in August 2018, has been recognized with the Platinum A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, acknowledging its exceptional contribution to cultural architecture and innovative design solutions. The project demonstrates remarkable attention to safety and quality, incorporating rigorous testing procedures including German wind tunnel tests for the louvers, while successfully addressing urban planning challenges by reserving space for future subway connections and creating an immersive cultural experience space.
