Story of Ganzhi Book is an innovative typographic and book design project that masterfully bridges ancient Chinese philosophy with contemporary geometric aesthetics. This sophisticated publication, designed by Wei LYU, represents a groundbreaking approach to visualizing traditional Chinese concepts such as Yin-Yang, the Five Elements, and the Ganzhi system through modern design principles. The work consists of two distinct yet interconnected components: a unique typeface design and an innovative binding system. The typeface, inspired by the ancient Chinese Hetu and Luoshu diagrams, comprises 24 distinctive characters that incorporate both Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, along with sun and moon symbolism, rendered through a minimalist combination of dots and lines. The color palette draws from the traditional Chinese Five Elements theory, incorporating hues representing gold, wood, water, fire, and earth. The book's physical structure employs an ingenious dual-direction binding technique, where two volumes share a common spine but open in opposite directions, creating a physical metaphor for unity and duality. This sophisticated design, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, exemplifies excellence in both conceptual depth and technical execution.
