Steelyards

Steelyards, also known as Roman scales or Roman balance, are a type of weighing instrument that have been used for centuries to measure the weight of objects. The steelyard consists of a beam which is suspended from a fixed point, and a weight which slides along the beam to indicate the weight of the object being weighed. The beam is usually graduated so that the weight can be read off directly. Steelyards were widely used in Europe from the 13th century until the 19th century, and were particularly popular in markets and trading centers. The steelyard is a simple and reliable instrument, and was widely used in trade and commerce. It was particularly useful for weighing heavy objects, such as sacks of grain or bales of wool, as the weight could be easily adjusted by sliding the weight along the beam. The steelyard was also used in scientific experiments and investigations, as it provided a way of measuring the weight of objects with a high degree of accuracy. The design of the steelyard varied depending on the region and the intended use. In some cases, the beam was made of wood, while in others it was made of metal. The weight could also be made of different materials, such as lead or brass. Some steelyards were designed to be portable, while others were more stationary and were used in marketplaces or trading centers. Despite the development of more sophisticated weighing instruments in the 19th century, the steelyard continued to be used in some parts of the world well into the 20th century. Today, the steelyard is still used in some traditional markets and shops, particularly in developing countries where more modern weighing instruments may not be available.
