Station C Train Station

Station C Train Station is an innovative architectural masterpiece that reimagines the conventional railway station paradigm by conceptualizing it as a theatrical stage seamlessly integrated into the local townscape. Designed by Japanese architect Teruo Miyahara and his team, including Naomichi Kurata, Shinya Kaneko, Koshi Yasuda, and Fumitaka Takagi, this 3,980-square-meter structure exemplifies a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic sophistication. The station's groundbreaking design, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, features a first floor constructed with highly transparent materials, deliberately eliminating visual barriers between the plaza and station to create an open, welcoming atmosphere. The second floor houses a community centre that showcases the region's renowned boat-building craftsmanship through its distinctive spiral cylindrical wooden board construction, simultaneously preserving traditional skills while training future artisans. This architectural marvel, completed in 2003, serves multiple functions beyond its primary role as a transportation hub, incorporating waiting areas for various modes of transport and an observation deck that offers panoramic views of the sea, mountains, and surrounding townscape. The design philosophy emphasizes the importance of identifying and implementing truly necessary elements while challenging conventional wisdom, resulting in a structure that not only serves its practical purpose but also enriches the cultural fabric of the community through its thoughtful integration of local architectural traditions and contemporary design principles.
