Stair House

Stair House is an innovative residential architectural design that reimagines urban living through a sophisticated integration of environmental and cultural sustainability principles. Located in Downtown Houston, Texas, this three-story, 3000-square-foot structure occupies a narrow 30ft by 100ft infill lot, drawing inspiration from traditional Dog Trot Houses of the southern United States and Spanish Colonial architecture. The design, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, features a distinctive composition of two stacked volumes connected by three types of stairs: a tapered straight-run stair, a spiral stair, and a kickback stair. The structure employs sustainable materials, including 30% recycled corrugated galvalume walls and energy-efficient insulated operable windows, while incorporating deep planter guard rails and covered outdoor patios to foster a connection with nature. The house's innovative design promotes cross-ventilation and natural lighting through open floor plans and extensive glass elevations, challenging conventional residential design paradigms. Completed in 2018 after a four-year development period, the project successfully addresses the complexities of urban living while maintaining a strong emphasis on environmental consciousness, featuring wood framing, steel moment frames, and TPO waterproofed roofing with rigid and batt insulation. This architectural achievement represents a significant advancement in sustainable urban housing design, demonstrating how modern residential architecture can evolve to meet the changing needs of city dwellers while maintaining a harmonious relationship with the natural environment.
