Stack Glyphs Characters Typography
Stack Glyphs Characters Typography is an innovative typographic design project that explores and preserves the unique cultural heritage of Chinese stacked characters through contemporary visual interpretation. This distinctive typographic system focuses on characters formed by overlapped glyphs, a special phenomenon in Chinese writing where multiple characters are superimposed to create new meanings. The project, created by designers Te-Yang Tang and Yi-Hsuan Lai, addresses the critical issue of disappearing stacked characters in modern Chinese typography by reconstructing and documenting these rare linguistic artifacts through graphical symbols. The design encompasses multiple components, including a main visual poster (890mm x 420mm), a comprehensive guide book (200mm x 100mm x 7mm), and an interactive seal element called Stack Glyphs Pileup (25mm x 25mm x 25mm). Drawing inspiration from ancient Chinese pictographs, the project demonstrates how character stacking can express accumulation and mass, such as in the progression from 'Mù' (wood) to 'Lín' (forest) to 'Sēn' (dense forest). The designers conducted extensive research, collecting examples from historical texts like the Analytical Dictionary of Chinese Characters, and transformed individual characters into contemporary icons while maintaining their cultural significance. This work, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, represents a significant contribution to the preservation and modernization of Chinese typography, offering both educational value and cultural preservation through its innovative approach to character visualization and interactive design elements.
