St Residential House is an innovative residential villa located in Hyogo, Japan, completed in November 2020, that masterfully integrates indoor and outdoor spaces while maximizing spectacular views of the city and sea. Designed by Japanese architect Michihiro Matsuo of METAPH ARCHITECT ASSOCIATES, this sophisticated two-story dwelling exemplifies contemporary Japanese architectural principles through its thoughtful spatial configuration and structural ingenuity. The 239.51-square-meter residence, built on a 429.69-square-meter site, features a distinctive central pool on the first floor that creates a compelling visual connection between the urban landscape and the ocean beyond. The design employs large-section laminated wood and metal joints to achieve expansive, column-free spaces and substantial openings while ensuring structural integrity in Japan's earthquake-prone environment. The architectural composition utilizes a frame-like construction method to maintain privacy while carefully curating views, effectively transforming the landscape beyond into living artwork within the home's carefully considered sight lines. The villa's innovative approach to environmental integration and structural design earned it a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2021, recognizing its excellence in combining aesthetic appeal with technical sophistication.
