Splash Alarm Clock is an innovative electronic device designed to revolutionize the morning wake-up experience by incorporating a unique water-sensing mechanism into the traditional alarm clock functionality. Developed by industrial designer Joon Gi Shin, this sophisticated device consists of a main alarm unit and a separate sensor component that work in tandem to ensure users fully awaken and begin their morning routines effectively. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Digital and Electronic Device Design category, addresses the common problem of users falling back asleep after initial awakening by requiring interaction with water to deactivate the alarm. The device's dimensions of 65mm x 65mm x 155mm house advanced features including an internal battery system to prevent premature deactivation, a micro USB port for power and custom alarm sound uploads, and innovative inductive charging technology for the water sensor. The sensor itself incorporates superhydrophobic coating technology to maintain its functionality and ease of maintenance. Through extensive research involving 15 subjects, the designer identified that the critical period immediately after waking requires additional support to help users maintain consciousness and make sound decisions. The alarm clock's unique approach to morning routines represents a significant advancement in user-centered design, combining practical functionality with behavioral psychology to create a more effective awakening experience. The device's integration of water interaction as a core feature not only ensures physical movement but also promotes immediate engagement with morning hygiene routines, demonstrating thoughtful consideration of human behavior patterns and daily rituals.
