Spike Lamp

Spike Lamp

Spike Lamp is an innovative lighting fixture that masterfully combines contrasting elements of punk culture aesthetics with Scandinavian design sensibilities, created by Finnish designer Sini Majuri. This distinctive piece features a ceramic spherical body measuring 350mm x 320mm, adorned with protruding metal spikes that extend its overall dimensions to 450mm x 370mm, creating a compelling visual tension between aggression and serenity. The design, inspired by social distancing concepts and fashion subcultures, employs a sophisticated two-sided plaster mold construction technique, with the ceramic component featuring a spray-glazed exterior finish that reflects its surroundings. The lamp's philosophical approach draws from natural defensive mechanisms found in flora and fauna, simplifying mathematical virus-like forms into an aesthetic statement about social dynamics. Despite its provocative exterior, the fixture produces a focused, warm light through a dimmable LED system, creating an intriguing dichotomy between its aggressive appearance and the soothing illumination it provides. The piece, which was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2020, represents a significant achievement in contemporary lighting design, successfully merging high-quality materials with startling aesthetic qualities while maintaining sophisticated craftsmanship throughout its studio-made production process.
