Space In Layers Private Residence

Space in Layers Private Residence is an innovative architectural project located in the mountainous region of Aomori prefecture, Japan, that exemplifies sophisticated spatial design principles through its distinctive layered composition. This low-budget residential structure, completed in 2008, masterfully addresses the challenges of a deep plot by implementing a revolutionary approach to spatial organization through carefully planned in-between zones. The design philosophy draws inspiration from classical Dutch paintings, incorporating their characteristic depth perception and spatial continuity into architectural form. The residence's structural framework consists of an exposed wooden column and post system, complemented by a thoughtfully curated selection of materials including rawan plywood, Japanese spruce, and birch plywood, each chosen to enhance the visual flow between spaces. The two-story residence, spanning 194 square meters, features a remarkable visual connection from the entrance through the living room, dining area, and Japanese room, extending to the rear garden. The design incorporates significant technical considerations for the snowy climate, including 100mm insulation and double-glazed windows, while maintaining aesthetic sophistication. The project's innovative use of modular construction not only facilitated remote project management but also established a refined proportional system throughout the space. This architectural achievement, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional merit in combining practical functionality with artistic vision, creating a harmonious living environment that transcends traditional spatial limitations through its layered design approach.
