Sousmotif Coaster

Sousmotif Coaster

Sousmotif Coaster is an innovative furniture design piece that reimagines traditional Greek textile motifs in a contemporary functional object. Created by Greek designer Vassilis Mylonadis, this sophisticated coaster set represents a thoughtful intersection of cultural heritage and modern utility, transforming traditional loom-woven textile patterns from Northern Greece into three-dimensional decorative objects for everyday use. The design, which won an Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, consists of precisely laser-cut components crafted from okoume wood and white plexiglass, measuring 110 mm x 110 mm x 3 mm per unit. Each set comprises four base coasters that ingeniously multiply into eight through a modular design system, allowing users to create various aesthetic combinations through the interplay of materials and positive-negative pattern relationships. The design's significance lies in its ability to preserve and reinterpret Greek folklore through contemporary design language, offering a sophisticated alternative to traditional souvenirs. The careful material selection process focused on achieving both durability and aesthetic appeal, with okoume plywood emerging as the optimal choice after extensive testing. The coaster's design demonstrates exceptional attention to detail in its production, requiring precise calibration to accommodate the different properties of wood and plexiglass, resulting in a harmonious blend of natural and synthetic materials that creates an engaging visual and tactile experience.
