Sound Circles Taiwan Sonic Textile Installation
Sound Circles Taiwan Sonic Textile Installation is an innovative sonic textile art installation that represents a groundbreaking fusion of traditional weaving techniques and contemporary sound technology, created to document and preserve a pivotal moment in Taiwan's LGBTQ history. This pioneering work, designed by artists Hyojin Yoo and Nupur Mathur, consists of two hand-woven circular textile installations that function as unconventional speakers, measuring 1220 mm x 110 mm x 1220 mm. The installation uniquely combines wool, copper wire, and magnets to create flat, textile-based speakers that challenge traditional audio presentation methods. The work's distinctive design requires intimate audience engagement, with listeners needing to position themselves within 20 centimeters of the installation to clearly hear the audio content, which includes personal interviews with Taiwanese individuals and ambient recordings capturing the atmosphere of Taiwan during the 2018 period when the country was considering the legalization of same-sex marriage. This innovative approach to sound art installation, which won an Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, demonstrates exceptional technical achievement in solving the complex challenges of creating textile-based speakers while maintaining audio quality through careful consideration of copper wire gauge, length, and tension between yarns. The circular form of the installation symbolically represents the coming together of diverse voices in a democratic society, while its intimate listening experience creates a powerful connection between the audience and the personal narratives contained within, effectively preserving and communicating an important moment in Asian social history through the medium of interactive textile art.
