Sonata Housing Complex is an innovative residential architecture project located in the Gonzalo Guerrero neighborhood of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, that masterfully integrates functionality, aesthetics, and cost-effectiveness through thoughtful architectural design. Completed in 2018, this housing development encompasses four distinct units of 134 square meters each, built on a 540-square-meter plot, featuring a sophisticated vertical layout with social areas on the ground floor and rooftop, complemented by two bedrooms on the first level. The complex's most distinctive architectural element is its innovative approach to external stairs, which serve both as functional circulation paths and as aesthetic elements creating dynamic shadow patterns throughout the day on its pristine white facades. This dual-purpose design solution effectively addresses sun protection requirements while maintaining cost efficiency, eliminating the need for expensive lattice work. The project, which won the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional creativity in utilizing traditional Mexican construction methods, primarily employing cement block walls, joists, and vaults. The complex's design philosophy emphasizes the creation of intimate spaces while fostering a sense of community through thoughtfully planned interaction zones in parking areas, rooftops, and open stairs. Each unit features private backyards and two parking spots, with the existing and newly planted trees providing natural shade and environmental integration.
