Solar Veloroute Multifunctional Photovoltaic Structure

Solar Veloroute Multifunctional Photovoltaic Structure is an innovative architectural solution that combines sustainable transportation infrastructure with renewable energy generation, designed by Peter Kuczia. This sophisticated design consists of aesthetically pleasing photovoltaic canopies that cover bicycle routes, transforming them into protected pathways while simultaneously generating clean electricity. The structure features a parametrically developed repeatable round arch system with non-reflective glass-glass solar panels attached to round tube steel purlins, complemented by a fabric membrane that provides additional weather protection and optimal light distribution. The design's remarkable efficiency is demonstrated by its capacity to generate approximately 2000 MWh of electricity per kilometer, sufficient to power 750 households or support more than 1,000 electric vehicles annually traveling 11,000 kilometers each. The structure's versatile design allows for flexible adaptation to various bike road widths and route curves, with adjustable panel rows, module distances, and inclination angles to accommodate local conditions. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category represents a significant advancement in sustainable urban infrastructure, serving multiple functions including weather protection for cyclists, solar energy generation, and public education about sustainability through integrated display systems. The design incorporates charging stations for electric bicycles and route lighting, while excess energy can be directed to the power grid, making it a comprehensive solution for modern urban mobility needs.
