SmartPark System Proposal For Outdoor Playgrounds
SmartPark System Proposal for Outdoor Playgrounds is an innovative technology-integrated playground system that revolutionizes traditional outdoor play experiences by combining physical activity with digital engagement. This comprehensive solution, designed by Nimet Basar Kesdi and Hatice S. Aydın, addresses contemporary challenges of children's decreased outdoor activity and parental security concerns through a sophisticated tracking and reward system. The system's core components include specialized wristbands equipped with RF technology, interactive playground equipment, and a companion mobile application that enables real-time monitoring. The playground features four distinct play zones: King of the Hill, with varying diameter platforms ranging from 400cm to 900cm; Groundshake units of 70cm diameter; Umbrella structures spanning 160cm; and Jumper zones comprising 6mx6m units. The design implements both task-based and time-based scoring mechanisms, encouraging social interaction by offering enhanced points for collaborative play. This Iron A' Design Award-winning social design project, recognized in the Social Design category, represents a significant advancement in addressing contemporary childhood development challenges. The system's unique approach utilizes technology as an enabler rather than a barrier to physical activity, incorporating features such as RF tracking for security, point accumulation for sustained engagement, and partnerships with educational events and retailers for reward redemption. Research supporting the design revealed that 67% of children spend less than three hours weekly at playgrounds, with 43% of parents preferring supervised indoor facilities, highlighting the critical need for such innovative solutions in modern urban environments.
