Skin Art Installation
Skin Art Installation is an innovative artistic creation comprising three ethereal human figures crafted from natural tree leaf skeletons, demonstrating a unique intersection of botanical material manipulation and sculptural artistry. The installation, created by Macedonian artist Maja Kirovska, explores themes of transformation, regeneration, and the delicate relationship between human form and natural elements. Each figure, suspended in space at human height, represents a hollow corporeal form that follows anatomical proportions while lacking limbs and heads, reminiscent of ancient sculptural remnants. The figures, measuring between 140-165 cm in height, are constructed using the circulatory system of tree leaves, which are carefully preserved, colored, and assembled using transparent adhesives to create translucent, three-dimensional forms that appear to float ethereally in space. The innovative technique developed for this installation required extensive material testing to achieve the perfect balance between structural integrity and ethereal lightness, resulting in a unique textile-like quality that maintains transparency while preserving anatomical accuracy. The installation, which won an Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, draws parallel metaphors between the shed skin of a snake and human transformation, suggesting themes of growth, metamorphosis, and the cyclical nature of existence. The dynamic nature of the installation is enhanced by its subtle movement in response to air circulation, creating an ever-changing interaction with the viewing space and emphasizing the delicate interplay between presence and absence, solidity and transparency.
