Sissis Wonderland Reading Space

Sissis Wonderland Reading Space is an innovative children's reading environment that exemplifies thoughtful interior architecture through its unique bubble-inspired spatial design. Created in Shanghai during 2018, this 108-square-meter space represents a paradigm shift in children's educational environment design, moving away from traditional flamboyant decorations toward a more sophisticated architectural approach that transforms the space itself into an interactive learning tool. The design philosophy centers on creating a safe, nurturing environment for children aged three to seven years, incorporating smoothly curving walls and deliberately avoiding sharp corners and straight lines to enhance spatial perception and safety. The project's distinctive bubble-like configuration creates interconnected spaces that seamlessly blend public and private areas, fostering both independent exploration and social interaction. Utilizing wood as the primary material, complemented by white paint and soft grey flooring, the space establishes a harmonious connection with nature while ensuring child safety. The design incorporates child-scaled elements such as varying-height stairs, multifunctional bookshelves that double as seating, zigzagging ramps, and mini arches, all carefully crafted to encourage physical exploration while maintaining safety. This Gold A' Design Award-winning project in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category demonstrates exceptional innovation in creating experiential spaces that support children's developmental needs, particularly during their crucial transition from subjective to objective world understanding. The design's emphasis on spatial fluidity and natural elements creates an environment that nurtures creativity, supports cognitive development, and facilitates both introverted and extroverted behavioral expressions in children.
