Shimokita House Residence
Shimokita House Residence is an innovative architectural project completed in 2017 in Japan's Shimokita Peninsula, specifically designed to promote health and cancer prevention through architectural-medicine principles. This two-story residential structure, encompassing 118.4 square meters of living space, represents a groundbreaking approach to health-conscious architecture, earning recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category. The residence incorporates six fundamental natural laws in its design, including sophisticated air flow control systems and the extensive use of Aomori cypress, known for its antibacterial properties and ability to create an atmosphere similar to forest bathing. The design philosophy emphasizes the enhancement of the parasympathetic nervous system and immune function through architectural elements, effectively bridging the gap between residential architecture and preventive medicine. Notable features include the implementation of slopes instead of traditional stairs to reduce physical stress, specialized ceramic tile bathing facilities for active oxygen removal, and thoughtful integration of natural elements such as sunlight, fresh air, and local greenery. The project, designed by Yoshihiro Matsuura, demonstrates particular sensitivity to the challenging climate conditions of northern Japan while maintaining a focus on creating a therapeutic living environment. The residence stands as a pioneering example of how architectural design can actively contribute to occupant health and wellbeing, particularly in regions with high cancer prevalence rates, through the strategic implementation of natural materials and evidence-based design principles.
