Shangri-La Hotel Hotel is an award-winning luxury hospitality design project completed in 2017 in Singapore, exemplifying a harmonious fusion of Southeast Asian cultural elements with contemporary design sensibilities. The interior design scheme, conceived by Japanese designer Ryoichi Niwata, masterfully integrates natural elements and cultural motifs across a sprawling 2,635-square-meter lobby space and 500 guest rooms. The design philosophy draws inspiration from Singapore's unique position as a cultural crossroads, incorporating diverse materials sourced from across Asia, including rattan from Southeast Asia, black lacquer finishes, and traditional Chinese furniture pieces. A distinctive feature of the lobby is its monumental green wall, constructed from black basalt rock and adorned with various Southeast Asian plant species, creating a modern interpretation of a traditional garden concept. The interior palette juxtaposes cream beige and black base colors with traditional Peranakan patterns and vibrant accents, while carefully curated artwork from Korea, Thailand, China, and Japan enhances the cultural narrative. The guest rooms embrace a zen-inspired aesthetic that prioritizes functionality for business travelers, featuring thoughtfully designed workspaces with bay windows and ergonomic furnishings. The project, which garnered the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in spatial planning, material selection, and cultural integration. The design successfully balances multiple functions within the lobby area, including a buffet counter, bar, and library-style lounge seating, creating versatile spaces that serve both hotel guests and visitors throughout the day.
