Shang Shui Historic Reminder is an innovative public art installation located in the Taichung MRT Jiushe station, Taiwan, that masterfully integrates cultural heritage with contemporary interactive technology. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning installation, designed by Professor Yueh Mei Cheng, spans 700cm x 700cm x 507.5cm and employs mirror-finish stainless steel sheets as its primary material to create a striking visual presence. The installation's conceptual foundation draws from the historical significance of the Jiushe area, particularly its century-old irrigation system that branched from the Dajia River and sustained the local tobacco industry during the Japanese colonial period. The design incorporates four key elements: tobacco cultivation heritage, irrigated water channels, sustainable resource management, and symbolic light of hope, all of which converge to narrate the developmental history of Old Taichung-Jiushe. The installation's innovative use of Augmented Reality (AR) technology creates an immersive experience, allowing passengers to interact with three distinct scenarios that showcase the area's historical evolution. The circular steel structure, divided into four segments with connecting arms, demonstrates exceptional engineering solutions to address thermal expansion while maintaining aesthetic integrity. The name Shang Shui, derived from the Taiwanese expression for most beautiful, represents the vital intersection of water and light, embodying themes of sustainability and prosperity while creating a dynamic public space that transforms the transit experience into a cultural journey.
