Shang Hai Villa is a distinguished residential architectural masterpiece completed in 2019, exemplifying a harmonious fusion of 1930s Shanghai Art Deco aesthetics with contemporary living requirements. Designed by Feng Guoqiang and Chen Yan, this expansive villa encompasses 2,300 square meters of indoor space and 1,600 square meters of outdoor gardens, making it one of China's most substantial private residences. The design, inspired by the cinematic aesthetics of 'The Great Gatsby' and the sophisticated Art Deco architecture of 1930s Shanghai, showcases an innovative spatial arrangement that includes a thoughtfully modified three-story living room, where the designers introduced a second-floor slab to create a more intimate atmosphere while maintaining visual continuity through floor-to-ceiling windows. The villa's functional layout spans multiple levels, featuring a ground floor with a grand foyer, living room, dining area, and kitchen, while the basement houses recreational facilities including a wine cellar, tea room, home theater, and logistics area ingeniously integrated beneath the garden hills. The second and third floors are dedicated to private quarters, with the entire space adorned with authentic 1930s French furniture, lighting fixtures, and decorative elements that maintain period consistency. The project, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in Interior Space and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional spatial planning through its architectural modifications, including the addition of a reading room in the basement and the strategic placement of shared vertical spaces that preserve the villa's grandeur while enhancing its functionality. The designers' meticulous attention to historical detail and contemporary comfort has resulted in a unique living environment that pays homage to Shanghai's golden age while meeting modern lifestyle requirements.
