Shadows Of The Sky Flower Troughs

Shadows Of The Sky Flower Troughs

Shadows Of The Sky Flower Troughs is an innovative architectural garden installation that masterfully combines sculptural artistry with functional design, created by Austrian designer Zsolt Szalai. This sophisticated outdoor furniture piece, spanning approximately 11 meters in length, represents a harmonious fusion of aesthetic beauty and practical utility, crafted from Corten steel - a material specifically chosen for its unique aging properties and durability. The design features a series of strategically positioned troughs that serve both as planters and privacy screens for residential spaces, particularly notable for their implementation in a Vienna loft terrace setting. The intentional use of weathering steel creates a continuously evolving aesthetic as the material naturally oxidizes, symbolizing the philosophical concepts of change and transience while maintaining structural integrity. The design's distinctive characteristic lies in its transformation from figurative sculptures into simplified, functional forms, creating a compelling interplay between hard geometric lines and soft natural elements when planted. The installation demonstrates exceptional attention to spatial considerations, with carefully calculated heights and angles that optimize natural light penetration while maintaining privacy, exemplifying the designer's meticulous approach to both form and function. This remarkable work, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Garden and Outdoor Furniture Design category, showcases an innovative approach to contemporary outdoor design, where the contrast between industrial materials and organic elements creates a dynamic visual narrative that evolves with time and seasonal changes.
