Shadow Multifunctional Lifesaving Blanket
Shadow Multifunctional Lifesaving Blanket is an innovative humanitarian design solution created to address the critical needs of refugees and displaced persons during emergency situations. This versatile protective equipment, designed by Xudong Cai, represents a significant advancement in personal safety gear by combining three essential survival functions: a buoyancy aid, an emergency thermal blanket, and a sleeping bag. The design incorporates high-frequency heat-sealing technology to ensure waterproof integrity and durability, featuring a specialized construction that includes buoyancy sponge material providing approximately 90N of flotation support and an aluminum film inner layer for thermal reflection and heat retention. When fully expanded, the blanket measures 2000x1500x5 millimeters, while maintaining a compact folded size of 500x200x150 millimeters for easy portability. This multifunctional design, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Safety Clothing and Personal Protective Equipment Design category, addresses three critical survival scenarios: maritime emergencies through its buoyancy aid function, immediate post-rescue thermal protection via its emergency blanket configuration, and temporary shelter needs through its sleeping bag functionality. The integration of waterproof interlayer protection for essential documents demonstrates thoughtful consideration of refugees' practical needs, while the aluminum film material effectively reflects body heat to prevent hypothermia in challenging conditions. The design's development was inspired by tragic refugee incidents in the Mediterranean Sea, embodying a humanitarian response to global displacement crises while reflecting the social responsibility of contemporary design practice.
