Shade Partition Shelf
Shade Partition Shelf is an innovative furniture design that seamlessly integrates traditional Japanese architectural elements with contemporary functionality, created by Japanese designer Yuto Hiramatsu. This sophisticated piece draws inspiration from Shoji, the traditional Japanese sliding doors, incorporating their distinctive aesthetic and cultural elements into a modern storage solution. The design features a meticulous construction of soft cedar wood frames combined with Washi, a specialized Japanese paper, creating a unique interplay of light, shadow, and texture. Standing at 1500mm in height, 555mm in width, and 200mm in depth, the shelf comprises multiple frames, each measuring 280mm in height, which can be customized through the application or removal of Washi panels. The design's innovative approach lies in its versatility and cultural synthesis, allowing users to modify the shelf's appearance by changing the Washi paper or adjusting the wooden frame configurations. The careful selection of materials, including vertical grain for the frame and side panels and knotty grain for the top panel, demonstrates exceptional attention to craftsmanship, while wooden dowels ensure structural integrity at joint surfaces. A notable technical achievement in this design is the development of a special mold that addresses the challenge of wood expansion and contraction during Washi replacement. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning creation in the Furniture Design category represents a sophisticated blend of traditional Japanese craftsmanship with modern furniture design, offering both practical storage solutions and aesthetic value through its translucent properties and adaptable nature.
