Shade of the Municipal Square Citizen Square is an innovative urban landscape design project that reimagines the traditional concept of administrative public spaces in China. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning project encompasses approximately 24,270 square meters and represents a significant departure from conventional government center designs by emphasizing civic engagement and public accessibility. The design philosophy centers on transforming the administrative service center from a purely managerial space into a welcoming community hub, utilizing a sophisticated grid of tree arrays to establish spatial order while creating intimate gathering areas. The project features three distinct types of tree pools (1600x1600, 2700x2700, and 6000x8000 millimeters) planted with beech trees and ginkgo biloba, complemented by two prominent palm elms at the entrance. The square incorporates high-quality granite paving in various specifications (300x300x40, 300x600x40, 400x800x40, and 600x1200x40 millimeters) and implements low-intensity Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles to ensure security while maintaining openness. A notable feature is the Halprin-style waterscape, which not only provides aesthetic value but also effectively manages the site's topographical variations. The design allocates 35% of the space to tree coverage, creating comfortable, shaded outdoor areas that serve multiple functions including public transport waiting areas, rest zones, and social gathering spaces. The project successfully overcomes several challenges, including complex site topography, extensive pipeline infrastructure, and the need to balance traditional administrative aesthetics with contemporary design principles, ultimately creating a space that functions as a living room for civic life.
