Shade House
Shade House is an innovative architectural design that exemplifies the harmonious integration of natural elements with residential spaces, particularly addressing the challenges of dense urban environments in Japan. This thoughtfully conceived structure, designed by Satoshi Fujinaka, demonstrates a sophisticated approach to managing spatial constraints while maximizing connection with natural elements, especially the sky. The design employs a strategic combination of reinforced concrete and traditional Japanese wooden construction methods, featuring a distinctive dual-roof configuration that creates an intentional visual corridor to the sky. The structure's intelligent use of elevation differences, with portions built 1.0 meter below ground level, enables compliance with height restrictions while creating dynamic interior spaces. The house incorporates a 910mm x 910mm grid system for its wooden components, facilitating both structural clarity and cost-effective construction management. Notable design elements include carefully positioned windows that optimize natural light while controlling heat load, and a thoughtful progression of spaces from the entrance through the dining area to the living room, creating a natural flow that draws occupants' attention skyward. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, showcases innovative solutions for contemporary urban living challenges while maintaining a strong connection to nature and traditional building techniques.
