Serenity Residential House is a thoughtfully renovated residential project in Taipei, Taiwan, that exemplifies the harmonious integration of modern design principles with natural elements. Originally a 30-year-old structure, this 313.5-square-meter, three-story dwelling was transformed into a contemporary sanctuary that prioritizes tranquility and family connectivity. Designed by Ko-Wei Liao, the residence masterfully leverages its unique mountainside location, incorporating expansive windows to maximize natural illumination and establish seamless visual connections with the surrounding landscape. The architectural intervention emphasizes the creation of open, flowing spaces, particularly evident in the integration of the kitchen, dining, and living areas, which fosters familial interaction while maintaining distinct private zones, including a dedicated children's living space. The material palette is dominated by teak, chosen for its natural resistance to termites and humidity, as well as its rich, warm aesthetic that complements the modern architectural elements. Environmental consciousness is reflected in the careful positioning of windows to optimize natural light while maintaining privacy from neighboring properties. The design's sophisticated approach to space planning and material selection earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its excellence in creating a harmonious living environment that serves as a peaceful retreat from urban life. The project demonstrates exceptional attention to sustainable practices and user-centered design, incorporating warm-toned marble and grey tiles that echo natural stone elements, further strengthening the connection between interior and exterior spaces.
