SEI-AN Stargazing Tea Rooms Tea Ceremony House

SEI-AN Stargazing Tea Rooms Tea Ceremony House is an innovative architectural masterpiece located in Bisei, Okayama Prefecture, Japan, designed by Moriyuki Ochiai as a harmonious constellation of sixteen tea ceremony spaces that uniquely blend traditional Japanese tea culture with astronomical observation. This architectural marvel, completed in 2018 and recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a groundbreaking approach to traditional tea house design, featuring individual structures measuring 1800mm in width and length, with a height of 2100mm. The design concept draws inspiration from the town's reputation as a stargazing sanctuary and its historical connection to Eisai, the Buddhist priest who introduced green tea to Japan. Each tea room is thoughtfully crafted with polygonal openings and special painted wood surfaces that create an immersive experience, allowing visitors to observe natural phenomena, including starlight, while participating in tea ceremonies. The exterior walls incorporate mirrors that reflect the surrounding environment, reminiscent of local rice paddies, creating a dynamic visual experience that changes throughout the day. The arrangement of these structures forms an organic extension of the landscape, seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor spaces while providing versatile areas for various cultural activities, including astronomy club gatherings, tea ceremonies, concerts, and theatrical performances. The project's innovative design philosophy successfully merges traditional Japanese tea room concepts with contemporary architectural elements, creating a unique spatial installation that enhances the connection between human activities and natural surroundings.
