Seaman Schepps
Seaman Schepps (1881-1972) was an American jewellery designer renowned for his innovative and bold designs that challenged traditional jewellery conventions. Born in New York City to immigrant parents, Schepps began his career as a shell dealer before transitioning to jewellery design in the 1920s. He quickly gained a reputation for his unique style, which often incorporated unusual materials such as seashells, wood, and baroque pearls alongside precious gems. Schepps' designs were characterized by their whimsical, organic forms and vibrant color combinations, reflecting his love of nature and his keen eye for aesthetics. His signature pieces included the Mousetrap bracelet, featuring a gold band with a pavé-set diamond mouse, and the Grape Bunch brooch, showcasing amethysts and emeralds in a lifelike cluster. Schepps' clientele included many of the era's most fashionable women, such as the Duchess of Windsor, Coco Chanel, and Marlene Dietrich. He collaborated with fashion designers like Elsa Schiaparelli and Paul Poiret, creating jewellery that complemented their avant-garde clothing. Throughout his career, Schepps continued to innovate, experimenting with new materials and techniques, such as the use of clear plastic in the 1930s and the incorporation of carved gemstones in the 1940s. His designs were featured in major exhibitions, including the 1939 New York World's Fair and the 1946 Modern Handmade Jewelry show at the Museum of Modern Art. Schepps' influence extended beyond his lifetime, with his bold, unconventional approach inspiring generations of jewellery designers. Today, his pieces are highly sought after by collectors and continue to be celebrated for their creativity, craftsmanship, and enduring style.
