Scent Of A Golden Age Coffee Shop

Scent of a Golden Age Coffee Shop is an award-winning architectural renovation project that transformed a sixty-year-old two-story shophouse into a sophisticated modern coffee establishment in the historic Chihkan District of Tainan. Designed by Joye Chuang and Celine Liou in 2019, this 158.67-square-meter space masterfully integrates Japanese Showa-era aesthetics with contemporary coffee culture. The design's distinctive features include a spiral staircase that optimizes circulation near the bar counter, an oval roof opening reminiscent of traditional Japanese architecture, and a thoughtfully curated color scheme incorporating Showa-era gold and autumn hues. The interior space is characterized by its harmonious blend of old and new elements, featuring revivalist woodwork, concrete cylinders, and vintage handmade paper umbrellas that create a cohesive aesthetic experience. The second floor incorporates a mezzanine design with a small Japanese garden, complete with a flagstone path and millstone fountain, while the raised seating area resembles a floating pavilion with traditional rush mat accommodations. The professional service area demonstrates meticulous attention to detail with its minimalist color palette and advanced coffee preparation equipment. The project, which earned the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, exemplifies excellence in spatial design through its innovative interpretation of historical elements, sophisticated material selection, and careful consideration of functionality. The design successfully creates an atmosphere that captures the essence of nostalgic warmth while maintaining contemporary relevance, demonstrated through elements such as the sapphire-textured wall painting that spans both floors, evoking the rising smoke of coffee bean roasting, and the thoughtful interplay between interior and exterior lighting that enhances the space's atmospheric quality.
