Scala Stair

Scala Stair is an innovative architectural element that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of form and function in interior design, created by designers Despina Souhlas and Nebojsa Stanic. This sophisticated vertical circulation solution features a distinctive design where open-loop treads on the lower run transform into an enveloping tunnel formation on the upper section, creating a compelling transitional space. Crafted from raw steel and FSC-certified wood with a non-VOC midnight mahogany stain, the stair spans 48 inches in width with 15 risers at 7 inches each. The design draws inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie Style Houses and employs the architectural principle of spatial compression and release, where a constrained passage enhances the perceived spaciousness of the subsequent area. This psychological effect is achieved through the stair's unique dual-experience design, allowing users to both step on and through the structure. The innovative approach effectively addresses the challenge of a lower ceiling height on the upper level while maintaining an open feel throughout the lower run. The design, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional material integration and spatial consideration, establishing a sophisticated gateway between floors that transcends mere vertical circulation to become an architectural feature that shapes spatial perception and user experience.
