Savannah
Savannah is an English word attested in the early 19th century and is likely derived from the Spanish word zavana meaning ‘a flat grassland’. This could be further traced back to the word zabana that derives from the Taino language, originally spoken by the indigenous people of the Caribbean. Due to the influence of colonization, the use of the word spread to other parts of the Americas and the Caribbean. It is also possible that the word was derived from the African languages, specifically from the Bantu languages. Morphologically, the word Savannah is a noun describing a flat grassland which is characterized by trees that are widely spaced apart as well as by a dry, hot climate. With respect to pragmatics, the word is used to describe a type of terrain, often associated with sub-Saharan Africa and is used in everyday language when referring to this type of terrain. Furthermore, it is also used to refer to cities, geographical regions and even to national parks.
