Sanya Peninsula Clubhouse Leisure Space

Sanya Peninsula Clubhouse Leisure space is an award-winning architectural masterpiece located in the Luhuitou scenic area of Sanya city, China, exemplifying innovative spatial design and cultural integration within a challenging basement setting. This 5,000-square-meter leisure facility, designed by Joe Chan and completed in 2016, masterfully transforms subterranean constraints into opportunities through sophisticated architectural solutions and thoughtful material selection. The design's conceptual foundation draws inspiration from sea caves, skillfully incorporating local volcanic rocks and Mongolian black marble to create an immersive journey through carefully crafted spaces. The clubhouse features a remarkable 155-meter corridor in Basement 1, which houses various functional areas including a lobby, cafeteria, Chinese restaurant, private rooms, tea room, library, chess rooms, gymnasium, and swimming pool. The design overcame significant challenges, including structural limitations and moisture concerns, through innovative solutions such as strategic beam placement and the creative narrowing of the outdoor swimming pool to optimize interior space. The Neo-Chinese style is elegantly expressed through cost-effective materials, including smoky oak grilles featuring Sanhualiuwan patterns reminiscent of the Forbidden City's architecture. This sophisticated approach to design earned the project a Golden A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its exceptional achievement in spatial innovation and cultural integration. The project's success lies in its ability to balance functional requirements with aesthetic excellence while working within a modest budget of EUR400 per square meter, demonstrating remarkable creativity in material selection and space utilization.
