Santos House
Santos House is an innovative residential architectural project completed in 2002 in Escobar, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, that exemplifies the sophisticated use of wood as a primary construction material. Designed by architect Fernando Abelleyro, this 110-square-meter dwelling masterfully integrates with its natural surroundings through a thoughtful two-level design that creates a dynamic spatial relationship between interior and exterior environments. The structure's most distinctive feature is its ingenious sectional displacement between floors, crowned by a glazed roof that facilitates natural illumination and establishes a profound connection with the surrounding landscape. A strategic metal roof extension provides essential solar protection while maintaining the building's architectural integrity. The house demonstrates exceptional spatial organization, with public areas situated on the ground floor and private spaces on the upper level, connected by a dramatic double-height space that serves as the heart of the home. The construction employs a sophisticated combination of materials, primarily utilizing eucalyptus wood components treated with specialized finishes for both structural and aesthetic purposes. The project overcame significant challenges during its realization, including regulatory hurdles and economic constraints, ultimately emerging as a testament to innovative wooden architecture. The design's excellence was recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, acknowledging its outstanding contribution to residential architecture and sustainable building practices. The project's success in harmoniously blending technological innovation with environmental sensitivity has established it as a significant reference point for wooden architecture in contemporary design.
