Samuel Croxall
Samuel Croxall was a British author, divine, and translator who lived in the 18th century. He was born in 1691 and died in 1752. He is best known for his fables, which were published in 1722 under the title Fables of Aesop and Others. Croxall's fables were widely popular during his time and were used as moral instruction for children. His fables were not original works, but rather translations of Aesop's fables and other ancient works. Croxall's translations were praised for their clarity and accessibility, making them a popular choice for children's literature. Croxall was also a clergyman and served as the rector of St. Mary-at-Hill in London. He was a member of the Royal Society and was known for his interest in natural history. In addition to his fables, Croxall also wrote several religious works, including The Fair Example, or, The Modest Queen and Sermons on Several Subjects. Despite his literary and religious accomplishments, Croxall's reputation has been somewhat overshadowed by his contemporary, the poet Alexander Pope. Pope was a harsh critic of Croxall's fables and accused him of plagiarism. However, Croxall's fables have endured and continue to be read and enjoyed today.
