Sakura Shimizu Packaging is an innovative packaging design system created for a Japanese floral artist, distinguished by its sophisticated minimalist approach and thoughtful integration of cultural elements. The design, which earned the Platinum A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, exemplifies the harmonious balance between functionality and aesthetic restraint through its uniform gray color scheme, deliberately chosen to enhance rather than compete with the vibrant colors of the floral arrangements it contains. The comprehensive packaging system encompasses various sizes of boxes and paper bags, including large boxes (250x250x110mm), small boxes (180x180x110mm), and specialized long boxes (645x120x104mm) for different floral arrangements. At the heart of the design is a refined interpretation of the Japanese kanji character for flower (花), serving as the brand's primary symbol and effectively communicating the artist's Japanese heritage and expertise. The packaging's sleek, achromatic design language extends across multiple touchpoints, including store cards, postcards, and wrapping paper, creating a cohesive brand identity that conveys dignity and quality. The innovative sleeve-style box construction allows for seamless display integration within customers' homes, while the herbarium gifts feature a complete gray paper covering that creates an element of surprise when unwrapped, revealing the vivid floral contents within. This thoughtful design approach, implemented in Sapporo, Japan, since June 2018, represents a significant departure from conventional floral packaging designs, which typically employ bright colors and literal flower motifs.
