S.Joao Structure Installation
S.Joao Structure Installation is an innovative architectural art installation that reinterprets the traditional Portuguese street festival of Saint John the Baptist through contemporary design elements. Created in 2014, this immersive installation spans 10 by 18 meters and features 500 reflective balloon-like forms suspended from an orthogonal grid ceiling, varying in height from 1.1 to 3 meters. The installation's design brilliantly captures the essence of one of Europe's most vibrant street festivals, where celebrants traditionally exchange playful gestures with garlic flowers and soft hammers. The structure employs a sophisticated combination of materials, including cardboard polygons coated with reflective PVC film, raffia cord for suspension, and hundreds of clothespins for securing the elements. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning installation in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category demonstrates exceptional innovation in its approach to cultural interpretation, combining traditional festive elements with modern materials and design techniques. The project's significance extends beyond its aesthetic appeal, serving as a powerful commentary on socioeconomic conditions in Portugal while fostering community engagement through its collaborative installation process. The structure's reflective surfaces create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, symbolically representing both the festive nature of the celebration and the contemporary social context, while its balloon-like forms echo the traditional decorative elements of the festival, creating a harmonious blend of cultural heritage and modern design sensibilities.
