Ryukyu Minivet

The Ryukyu Minivet (Pericrocotus tegimae) is a small passerine bird that is endemic to the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. This bird species is typically found in forests, woodlands, and other wooded habitats, and is known for its striking appearance. The male Ryukyu Minivet has a distinctive black and yellow plumage, with a black head and wings, and bright yellow underparts and tail. The female, on the other hand, has a more subdued olive-green and yellow plumage. The Ryukyu Minivet is a relatively small bird, measuring between 12–13.5 cm in length and weighing around 12–13 g. Despite its small size, this bird is an active and agile hunter, preying on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates. It is known for its acrobatic flights, which it uses to catch its prey in mid-air. In terms of breeding, the Ryukyu Minivet typically nests in trees, and builds a cup-shaped nest out of twigs, grass, and other plant materials. The female lays a clutch of 2-4 eggs, which she incubates for around 14 days. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs and caring for the chicks, which fledge after around 14-16 days. Despite being relatively common in its native range, the Ryukyu Minivet is considered to be a species of conservation concern due to habitat loss and fragmentation. It is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, and is protected under Japanese law.
