Ruman Origin Farmstead Architecture

Ruman Origin Farmstead Architecture is an award-winning architectural complex that represents a comprehensive exploration of rural living through the lens of contemporary Chinese cultural values, situated on the periphery of Chengdu within a rice paddy field environment, designed to address the growing phenomenon of urban residents seeking respite from metropolitan life while simultaneously confronting the challenge of rural depopulation through innovative spatial planning and architectural intervention. The project comprises three distinct courtyards, each representing different temporal architectural paradigms, past, present, and future, collectively spanning a total construction area of 1200 square meters within a 4000 square meter site, embodying the traditional forested settlement characteristics indigenous to Western Sichuan while integrating multifunctional programming that accommodates residential living, exhibition spaces, social gathering areas, and hospitality functions. The first courtyard, positioned at the entrance, employs purely wooden construction methodologies that honor the traditional aesthetics and historical architectural vocabulary of ancient Western Sichuan buildings, functioning primarily as a reception space that establishes the cultural foundation for the entire complex. The second courtyard transitions into contemporary architectural expression, serving as a modern restaurant and multi-functional space that symbolizes the openness and functional adaptability characteristic of modern design thinking, bridging historical precedent with current lifestyle requirements. The third courtyard distinguishes itself as a future-oriented, energy-efficient dwelling unit constructed using conventional building materials and methods while incorporating advanced sustainable technologies including solar photovoltaic panels, ground source heat pumps, raised floor systems, rammed earth facades, inner courtyards with integrated patios, and double-layer hollow door and window systems designed to dramatically reduce energy consumption while maintaining thermal comfort and environmental performance. The architectural design confronts the complex challenge of integrating modern functional requirements and contemporary building technologies into traditional architectural frameworks without compromising the cultural authenticity and historical character that define regional architectural identity, necessitating innovative approaches to preserve historical features, traditional construction techniques, and local cultural narratives while accommodating twenty-first-century living standards and sustainability imperatives. The design process, which commenced in February 2020 and concluded in June 2022, followed by construction from December 2020 to June 2023, involved extensive ethnographic research with local residents across various age groups and professional backgrounds to gather diverse perspectives on spatial needs, living patterns, social interaction preferences, and cultural practices, informing an architectural solution that responds authentically to regional context while establishing new paradigms for rural architectural design. Ruman Origin Farmstead Architecture exemplifies how contemporary architectural practice can serve not merely as physical shelter but as a vehicle for cultural restoration and social transformation, demonstrating that rural architecture can simultaneously honor traditional building wisdom, meet contemporary functional demands, and pioneer sustainable design strategies for future development. The project received the Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2025, one of the world's most prestigious design competitions, recognizing designs that demonstrate exceptional expertise, creativity, and innovation while contributing meaningfully to advancing design practice and improving quality of life through thoughtful integration of aesthetic excellence, functional efficiency, structural integrity, environmental responsibility, and cultural sensitivity. The recognition acknowledges how Ruman Origin Farmstead Architecture successfully navigates the tension between preservation and innovation, creating spaces that resonate emotionally with users while addressing pressing contemporary concerns including sustainable development, cultural continuity, rural revitalization, and the evolving relationship between urban and rural environments in rapidly developing regions, ultimately proposing an architectural model that could inform future approaches to rural development throughout China and similar contexts globally where traditional settlement patterns face pressure from modernization and urbanization forces.
