Rook Cafe Bar Delicatessen
Rook Cafe Bar Delicatessen is an innovative hospitality design project that masterfully integrates contemporary aesthetics with historical preservation, situated in a historic building above the ruins of Ancient Trikki in Greece. The 140-square-meter establishment, which earned the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design category, represents a sophisticated interpretation of adaptive reuse principles. The design concept, developed by Helen Brasinika, draws inspiration from the strategic symbolism of a chess rook (tower), creating an intricate interplay between black and white elements that metaphorically bridges past and present. The space extends across three levels - basement, ground floor, and mezzanine - featuring distinctive architectural elements such as exposed structural beams, Roman-inspired metal arches, and a striking black cubical structure that serves multiple functions. The basement, incorporating preserved ancient walls reinforced using traditional masonry techniques with goat's wool and white clay, functions as a wine-tasting area adorned with antique metallic finishes and vintage leather elements. The ground level showcases innovative design features including two opaque glass lanes flanking the central black structure, symbolically representing temporal connections through their daylight-filtering properties. The material palette combines contemporary elements like CORIAN and specially treated metals with traditional materials such as antique cement tiles reminiscent of Roman villas, while the lighting scheme employs both modern LED systems and vintage-style fixtures. The establishment's commitment to local heritage extends to its culinary philosophy, incorporating organic produce from nearby farms and traditional cuisine, establishing itself as a flagship model for adaptive reuse in hospitality design that successfully balances historical preservation with contemporary functionality.
