Robert Sperry

Robert Sperry (1927-1998) was an American ceramic artist renowned for his innovative contributions to the field of studio pottery. Born in New York, Sperry's passion for ceramics was ignited during his time at the University of Washington, where he studied under influential ceramic artist Paul Bonifas. Sperry's early work was characterized by his experimentation with abstract expressionist techniques, which he applied to his ceramic surfaces through the use of layered glazes and bold, gestural brushwork. As his career progressed, Sperry's focus shifted towards the exploration of the vessel form, particularly the teapot, which became a recurring motif in his work. He was known for his masterful throwing skills and his ability to create forms that were both functional and sculptural. Sperry's unique approach to surface decoration, which often incorporated the use of multiple glazes and the application of glaze with a spray gun, resulted in a body of work that was both visually striking and technically innovative. Throughout his career, Sperry's work was exhibited widely and earned him numerous accolades, including a Fulbright scholarship and a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship. He also had a significant impact as an educator, teaching at the University of Washington for over three decades and mentoring countless aspiring ceramic artists. Sperry's legacy as a pioneer in the field of studio pottery continues to inspire and influence contemporary ceramic artists around the world.
