Robert Engman

Robert Engman was an American sculptor and installation artist renowned for his precise, elegant sculptures made from a wide range of materials, including wood, metal, and stone. He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1937 and went on to become a professor of art at several universities, most notably at the University of Wisconsin-Stout and the University of California-Santa Barbara. Engman's works have been featured in exhibitions at museums and galleries throughout the United States, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum in New York City. Engman's sculptures often explore the relationships between form, space, and light, and are characterized by their intricate geometric shapes and clean lines. He was particularly interested in the interplay between positive and negative space, and many of his sculptures feature voids or negative spaces that are just as important as the solid forms surrounding them. Engman's works are also notable for their attention to detail and craftsmanship, with each piece carefully constructed to achieve a specific effect. In addition to his sculptures, Engman also created a number of large-scale installations, including the iconic Ice Tower in Madison, Wisconsin. This towering structure, made entirely of ice, was designed to gradually melt over the course of several weeks, creating a constantly evolving work of art. Engman's installations often incorporated elements of nature, such as water or light, and were intended to create immersive, sensory experiences for viewers. Throughout his career, Engman received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the John D. Rockefeller 3rd Fellowship, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award. He passed away in 2019, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and thought-provoking works that continue to inspire and captivate viewers.
