Rivet Buttons
Rivet buttons, also known as jean buttons, are a type of fastener commonly used on denim clothing such as jeans, jackets, and shorts. They consist of two parts: a flat, circular button with a raised edge, and a stud with a long, thin shaft that fits through a small hole in the fabric. The button and stud are then pressed together using a special tool, which deforms the shaft of the stud and secures it to the button. Rivet buttons were first patented in the late 1800s by Levi Strauss, the founder of the famous denim company. They were originally used to reinforce the pockets of work pants, which were prone to tearing due to the weight of tools and other objects carried by workers. Over time, rivet buttons became a decorative element as well as a functional one, and they are now a ubiquitous feature of denim clothing. One advantage of rivet buttons is their durability. Unlike other types of fasteners such as zippers and snaps, which can break or come undone over time, rivet buttons are designed to withstand heavy use and frequent washing. They are also relatively easy to install, requiring only a simple tool and a small hole in the fabric. Despite their popularity, rivet buttons have been the subject of controversy in recent years due to concerns about their impact on the environment. The manufacturing process for rivet buttons involves the use of toxic chemicals and produces significant amounts of waste. In response, some clothing companies have begun to explore alternative fasteners such as recycled metal buttons and snap closures.
