Returning Hut Residence

Returning Hut Residence

Returning Hut Residence is an exemplary architectural masterpiece that harmoniously integrates with its natural surroundings, situated on a wild hillside encompassed by mountains, forests, and sea views in Fujian, China. Completed in 2015 under the creative direction of Fumin Xu, this 390-square-meter residence embodies the philosophical concept of designless design, where architectural intervention deliberately retreats to allow nature's presence to dominate. The structure, nestled at the mountain's foot, demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to its environment by preserving and incorporating existing natural rocks and trees into its design scheme. The residence's exterior features meticulously hand-laid traditional stonework that seamlessly blends with the landscape, while the interior spaces are characterized by their minimalist elegance, utilizing natural materials such as bluestone, slate, and solid wood. This thoughtful material selection, combined with simple lines and unadorned surfaces, creates a contemplative atmosphere that reflects the designer's and client's shared vision of returning to nature. The master bedroom's design particularly exemplifies this approach, being conceptualized around an existing stone formation, demonstrating how architecture can adapt to and celebrate natural elements rather than imposing upon them. The project, which won the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2017, represents a significant achievement in sustainable and contextual architecture, offering a compelling model for how contemporary residential design can achieve harmony with natural landscapes while providing modern comfort and functionality.
