Remaking Urban Artifacts Pocket Spaces For Public Activities

Remaking Urban Artifacts Pocket Spaces for Public Activities is an innovative urban design project that reimagines and revitalizes small-scale public spaces where alleys intersect with streets in urban environments. This groundbreaking initiative, developed by designer Min Zhuo alongside team members Sangshuang Liu, Xin Chen, and Yanfeng Chen, draws inspiration from the traditional Chinese concept of pavilion of wind and rain - a vernacular spatial typology commonly found in rural areas where villagers gather for social interactions. The project ingeniously transforms neglected urban corners into vibrant community spaces through a sophisticated marriage of public art and functional design, utilizing materials such as concrete, corten steel, stainless steel, custom ceramic plates, glass bricks, and fiber-reinforced plastic. Each pocket space, measuring approximately 10-20 square meters, serves as a contemporary interpretation of traditional gathering spaces, effectively bridging the gap between historical urban fabric and modern social needs. The design's significance lies in its ability to reinterpret cultural symbols through an abstract architectural language, creating open-air art galleries that evoke nostalgia while serving practical community purposes. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning project in the Urban Planning and Urban Design category demonstrates exceptional innovation in addressing urban renewal challenges with limited resources, successfully combining the roles of urban planner and artist to create meaningful social spaces that enhance community interaction and preserve cultural heritage. The project, implemented in Lishui, China, between March 2019 and January 2020, exemplifies how thoughtful urban design can transform seemingly trivial spaces into vital community assets that contribute to the social fabric of contemporary cities.
