Red-Flanked Bluetail
The Red-Flanked Bluetail (Tarsiger cyanurus) is a small passerine bird that belongs to the family Muscicapidae. It is a migratory bird that breeds in northern Europe, Siberia, and western Asia, and winters in southern Asia, Japan, and China. This bird has a distinctive appearance, with blue-grey upperparts, a bright orange-brown throat, a pale belly, and pinkish-buff flanks. It has a short tail and a small body, measuring around 13-14 cm in length and weighing around 10-12 grams. The Red-Flanked Bluetail prefers open habitats such as moorland, grassland, and scrub. During the breeding season, it can be found in mountainous areas with dense vegetation, while in the winter, it is more commonly found in lowland forests and gardens. This bird is known for its beautiful song, which consists of a series of high-pitched, melodious notes. The Red-Flanked Bluetail is an insectivorous bird, feeding on a variety of insects, spiders, and other invertebrates. It forages on the ground, hopping and running along the forest floor, and occasionally catching insects in mid-air. During the breeding season, it builds a cup-shaped nest made of grass, moss, and other plant materials, usually in a concealed location on the ground or in a crevice in a rock face. The Red-Flanked Bluetail is not considered to be globally threatened, although populations in some areas may be declining due to habitat loss and degradation. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting its breeding and wintering habitats, as well as reducing the impact of human activities such as logging and agriculture.
